Modeled Three‐Dimensional Currents and Eddies on an Alongshore‐Variable Barred Beach

چکیده

Circulation in the nearshore region, which is critical for material transport along coast and between surf zone inner shelf, includes strong vortical motions. The horizontal length scales vertical structure associated with motions are not well documented on alongshore-variable beaches. Here, a three-dimensional phase-resolving numerical model, Simulating WAves till SHore (SWASH), compared surfzone waves flows barred beach, used to investigate eddies. Model simulations measured bathymetry reproduce trends mean circulation patterns, including alongshore currents rip current cells observed offshore wave heights from 0.5 2.0 m incident directions 0 15° relative shore normal. of simulated eddies, quantified using wavenumber spectra vorticity, suggest that increasing directional spread intensifies small-scale eddies ((10) m). Simulations bathymetric variability ranging uniform highly variable indicate large-scale ((100) m) may be enhanced by variability, whereas less dependent variability. dependence magnitude scale (centroid) vorticity very low-frequency (f ≈ 0.005 Hz) weak outer zone, decreases toward shoreline. affected turbulence, shear, bottom boundary layer dynamics.

Currents and Eddies in Practice

When one passed as a student from Arts to Medicine, and back again to Arts-as some of us did-Professor Boas with his Shakespearean recollection of the witches would refer to our "fitful reappearances ." In making one of these, I invite you to come down from the bright circle where you have sojourned at the last few meetings, and have a peep at the pit-even though. in the modern theatre there ma...

M odelling outflows, coastal currents and eddies

Several types of flows driven by outflows on the continental shelf are examined mathematically and numerically. Within a quasigeostrophic framework, a variety of vertical structures and topographies are used. Features are explained in terms of potential vorticity conservation. The combined effects of topography and anomalous vorticity of the outflow are studied. First, shelf-like topography is ...

An Investigation on Beach Profile Changes in Front of Seawalls

Although there exist advanced models which predict beach profile for natural beaches, the behavior of the beaches in front of seawalls still suffers from the lack of appropriate theoretical models and sufficient measured data. In this paper, following the results obtained from the measurements, a beach profile evolution model is developed, using the measured probability distribution of the nea...

An Overview of Eddies and STAIRs

In databases where different resources have much changing characteristics, static query plans is often not a good solution. The problem is that, while a particular query plan might be a good alternative with some initial characteristics of the database, it may be a bad alternative when the characteristics changes. Consider, for example, joining the tables R, S and T , and assume first that R an...
